Biography

Karen Dietz, Ph.D. is
the owner of Polaris Associates, LLC, a San Diego, CA based company where she is
an expert in building communication skills through the power of storytelling.
She is a story expert, folklorist, management consultant, executive coach and
professional speaker. Karen works with select clients who want to propel their
leadership, organizational effectiveness and communication to a higher level.
She coaches executives in building skills, tools and a story repertoire to help
them connect one-on-one when speaking in front of hundreds, and to bridge the
gap between themselves and their employees. Karen also emphasizes stories in
Change Management, allowing organizations to maximize the effectiveness of their
Change initiatives. In addition, she helps leaders identify their
organization’s core story in order to articulate their brand and positioning
strategy.
Karen
began her work in the corporate world by starting her own training business in
Philadelphia in the early 1980s. Following five successful years delivering
thousands of hours of trainings to hundreds of people, she sold her business and
joined a San Diego management-consulting firm before founding Polaris Associates
in 1994. For the past 17 years, Karen has applied her rich cross training as a
folklorist, trainer, storyteller and organizational consultant to help people
and organizations improve their leadership, culture, products, and services.
The particular process she employs is derived from her expertise in the rigorous
and diverse fields of folklore, creativity, strategy, organizational
development, high performing teams, and interpersonal communications.
In
addition to her coaching and organizational work, Karen has written work-related
interpretive reports and software packages for the most popular Jungian
Personality Type instrument on the market,
which today are sold worldwide. She is currently working on translations of her
work with Western European publishers for the European market, as well as with
companies in Hong Kong and Singapore for the Asian markets. Karen has also
developed analytical tools to quickly determine an organization’s and their
leader’s values – their strengths, weaknesses and the effort involved in
changing the effectiveness of any particular value.
Karen
attended the University of Pennsylvania, receiving her MA and Ph.D. in Folklore.
In addition, over the years, she has received some of the best training and
education available from many traditional and renowned storytellers on the
importance and characteristics of compelling stories.
